Iona is an open-source research project focused on improving reliability,determinism, and upgrade safety in blockchain execution environments. The project explores deterministic state transitions, formal protocolversioning, compatibility-driven upgrades, and reproducible executiondesigned to reduce operational risk in distributed systems. Currentblockchain networks often face challenges during upgrades, includinginconsistent execution, network instability, and unclear migrationprocedures. Iona provides an experimental framework addressing theseproblems through explicit protocol invariants, replay verification,and structured upgrade mechanisms. The project includes a working reference implementation, determinismtest suite, fuzz testing infrastructure, and formal upgrade model.The goal is to contribute public research and infrastructure thathelps make blockchain systems more predictable, secure, and resilient. Funding will support development of deterministic execution validationtools, upgrade simulation frameworks, public testnet infrastructure,and open documentation. All outputs remain fully open-source under apermissive license and are intended as public goods for the broaderEthereum and Web3 ecosystem.
